Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), India is premier professional electronics industry under the Ministry of Defence manufactures a wide range of products both for the Defence as well as for the Civilian sector. Since its inception in the year 1954, BEL has grown into a multi-product, multi -technology, multi-unit company serving the needs of customers in diverse fields. VACUUM INTERRUPTERS (VI) covering the entire range of medium voltage Switchgear application is one of the wide range of products and services of BEL. The VI plant was set up in 1985 at Bangalore in technical collaboration with M/s SIEMENS GERMANY to manufacture Vacuum Interrupters from xx to 36kV and fault currents up to 40 KA. BEL has so far manufactured more than 200,000 tubes and sold to domestic and international customers. A state of the art facility for the manufacture of Compact VI Tubes using high vacuum brazing furnace was established by BEL in the year 1997. These miniaturized Tubes are based on axial magnetic field design, has low contact erosion and are manufactured by single shot brazing technique in a sophisticated high vacuum brazing furnace.The VI Plant manufactures approximately 40,000 VI Tubes of various types per annum catering to the needs of switch gears manufacturers and users across the world either through Circuit Breaker manufacturers in India like SIEMENS ABB, BHEL, JYOTI, CROMPTON GREAVES,ALIND,MEGAWIN SWGR etc. but also directly to overseas manufacturers of Vacuum Circuit Breakers and utilities. All the types of VI Tubes under manufacture have been type tested along with the Circuit Breakers of international companies as per IEC56 and IEC62271-100 (2001) standards in reputed power test houses like CPRI, India, KEMA, Netherlands, CESI, Italy,ICMET,Romania. BEL VI Plant has a well-established Quality Management System, which is certified for ISO 9001-2000 standard by LRQA. BEL is also certified for ISO 14001 environmental systems by LRQA.
