According to legend, in 8th Century BC, Princess Elyssa (better known as Dido) witnessed the fall of her Phoenician city, Tyre. To escape, she loaded up her riches and followers and set out on a grand trip around the Mediterranean destined for a new life. Elyssa's travels eventually ended in North Africa, in present day Tunisia. She wanted to build a new city for her people and asked the ruler for some land. As the legend goes, King Iarbus said she could have as much land as she could "cover with the skin of a dead ox". Elyssa was determined and very clever. She had her people cut the skin into thin strips and laid all the strips out to mark the borders of a very big piece land. She named her city Carthage and Elyssa became queen. Under Queen Elyssa's rule, the coastal city of Carthage became the most powerful city in the Mediterranean. Her people were the first to cultivate the olive tree in North Africa. Olive cultivation then spread quickly with the Romans^and the rest as they say "is history".Carthage Heritage Olive Oil understands the importance of this history and how it eventually shaped the olive oil industry thousands of years later. Now, Carthage Heritage produces some of the world's finest olive oils from its facility in Tunisia and we are proud to continue the legacy of Queen Elyssa and her city of Carthage by sharing our celebrated line of olive oils with international markets.
