The additives are typically organic compounds of transition metals (such as cobalt, iron, nickel, and manganese). Oxidative degradation is a complex series of chemical reactions in which the long chains of polyethylene molecules are broken down into shorter lengths by the action of oxygen, ultra-violet light and/or heat. This degradation process causes deterioration in the strength of the plastic, which becomes brittle and easily fragments into small pieces.
