UD prepreg machines are used for the production of UD prepregs for the technical textiles (e.g. ballistics) industry. Since the resin easily penetrates into the fibers, the process is very stable and the impregnation level is high. The device has a rear expansion device, which makes the uniformity better. Spread the yarn evenly and enter the equipment to start gluing, so that the fibers are fully transferred in the resin. After the fiber is glued, it enters the heating roller together with the PE film for compounding, and finally winds up to form a unidirectional UD cloth.
Thermoset prepregs are prepared in one step. The resin was coated on the support (silicone coated paper) by a reverse roll coater. The spread fibers are applied on the resin film and impregnated by heating the material. For further dipping, calibration and merging, one to two or three calendar units can be integrated into the machine. Both UD tape and fabric can be impregnated on this machine. The dipping speed is in the range of 3-10 m/min.
For impregnation of thermoplastic resins, resin films are prepared by melting the polymer in an extruder and metering the film thickness on an impregnation roll. The spread fibers are impregnated to a certain level on impregnating rolls and post-impregnated prior to final consolidation and cooling. The dipping speed is in the range of 3–15 m/min.
Crossply machine
Where a second layer is applied to a dipping machine or a second pass of the machine, a single layer process will be used. This process is used in the bulletproof industry, where the UD tape is oriented at 90 degrees, and in the thermoset resin composite industry, it can be oriented at 90-45 degrees.
