INTRODUCTION My names are Leon Lesrima and I specialize with the exports of chilled meats from Kenya (East Africa) to the UAE. The livestock primarily come from the northern parts of Kenya i.e. ‘Samburu, Laikipia and Marsabit regions/states. Limenga ventures prefers to source the livestock from those regions due to its climatic and environmental conditions which favor the growth and development of the animals. ABOITOIR/SLAUGHTER HOUSES There are two slaughter houses that Limenga ventures prefers to use its services, one managed by the Military (KENYA DEFENCE FORCES/KENYA MEAT COMMISSION) and a Private Slaughter house which is supervised by Government as well, in an Export Zone. All the slaughter houses meet HALAL requirements from the Kenya Bureau of Halal Certification (KBHC) and the process of export are as follows; a. SLAUGHTER BOOKINGS – slots are selected for slaughter 2 days before to allow ease of transport, documentation and similar quarantine procedures once again inside the slaughter houses. Limenga ventures prefers delivery of animals on Saturday to the slaughter houses, so that they can be slaughtered on MONDAY, WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. These 3 days are 1tonne of each or more depending with the client’s orders. b. FREIGHT/FLIGHT - Once the meat products have passed all bio-tests and are ready for consumption, then the chilling process for 24hours immediately begins in cold rooms before dispatch for export or to retailers. Flights from Kenya to the UAE are in good availability i.e. daily passenger and cargo flights. Airlines are Emirates, Qatar, Etihad and Kenya Airways MEAT PRICING In the current competitive meat prices, it varies with the meat standards i.e. quality. In every product, be it an electronic, motor vehicle or expensive watch, the better the quality/lifespan, the more pricey or expensive it can be. When it comes to human consumption, we all want to drink, eat healthy foods for ourselves and families which Limenga believes in healthy living. Pricing also varies with seasons i.e. drought/dry seasons or rainy/spring seasons and livestock can be scarce or available, making prices vary for local traders, exporters and importers. The table below shows an example of costs from purchasing of livestock, transportation, slaughtering, exporting and without miscellaneous or hidden costs such as feeding/monitoring/sorting in the quarantine farms.
